Trump announces plans to build an 'Iron Dome' missile defense system
President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he would sign an executive order to begin constructing an "Iron Dome" missile defense system in the United States, similar to the one used by Israel to intercept rockets. Speaking at a Republican congressional retreat in Miami, Trump emphasized the need for such a system to protect Americans, noting that it would be made in the USA. Trump’s comments came on the same day that Pete Hegseth officially took office as the new Defense Secretary. Trump outlined several executive orders he planned to sign, including one aimed at removing transgender ideology from the military. While Trump has frequently promised during his 2024 election campaign to build a version of Israel’s Iron Dome, he overlooked the system’s design for short-range threats. The system is not ideal for countering intercontinental missiles, which pose a greater risk to the U.S. Nonetheless, Trump continued to praise the Israeli Iron Dome, which has successfully intercepted rockets launched by groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, and asserted that the U.S. is entitled to similar protection.
