Students of Titumir College block road again
Students from Government Titumir College staged a protest this morning by blocking the road in front of the college’s main gate, demanding its transformation into a university. Rasel Sarwar, the officer-in-charge of Banani Police Station, confirmed that both sides of the road were blocked around 11:30am, with the blockade still in place by 1:00pm. This protest, now in its second consecutive day, intensified after some students from the group "Titumir Unity" began a hunger strike yesterday afternoon to highlight their seven key demands. The demands include the official recognition of Titumir University, the publication of its academic calendar, and the establishment of a university administration to begin the 2024-25 academic session’s admissions. Other demands focus on ensuring 100% residential facilities for students or covering the full cost of accommodation, introducing internationally recognized subjects such as Law and Journalism, and recruiting PhD-qualified faculty to improve educational standards. Additionally, the students are calling for limiting student intake to maintain quality education and allocating land and resources for a research lab that meets international standards. Walid Islam Anik, a student from the management department, expressed solidarity with the five students who began a hunger strike yesterday, emphasizing the urgent need for the government to fulfill their demands. Anik made a strong statement, saying, “If our demands are not met, the government will have to take our bodies.” The students are firm in their resolve, urging the government to take immediate action in response to their seven-point list of demands.
