OpenAI unveils new 'deep research' feature for ChatGPT
On Monday, OpenAI introduced a new tool for ChatGPT called "deep research" ahead of high-level meetings in Tokyo, as competition in the AI sector intensifies with China's DeepSeek chatbot. DeepSeek has caused a stir in Silicon Valley due to its high performance and purported low cost, urging US developers to accelerate their efforts. OpenAI described its new "deep research" tool as capable of completing tasks in minutes that would take a human many hours. The tool allows users to provide a prompt, after which ChatGPT finds, analyzes, and synthesizes information from numerous online sources to create a detailed research report. In a live demonstration, OpenAI showed how the tool can compile web search data to assist in recommending ski equipment for a holiday in Japan. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is in Tokyo to meet with Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and SoftBank Group's Masayoshi Son. The meetings are part of a larger initiative to invest in AI infrastructure, including building AI data centers. Altman also expressed plans to create a new kind of hardware in collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, though it may take several years to develop.
