Cancer is becoming an increasingly serious health issue in Bangladesh, with rising cases of various types such as lung, breast, cervical, and oral cancers. While genetic factors and environmental exposures contribute to cancer risk, lifestyle choices play a major role. On World Cancer Day, it is important to raise awareness about how simple lifestyle changes can significantly reduce cancer risk and improve overall health. Key preventive measures include quitting tobacco use, maintaining a balanced diet, staying active, and protecting oneself from infections.
Adopting a healthier diet that includes more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can lower cancer risk. Reducing the consumption of processed and red meats, along with cutting back on fried foods and sugary snacks, is also essential. Maintaining a healthy weight through regular physical activity is crucial, as obesity is linked to several types of cancer. Limiting alcohol intake and practicing safe sun exposure are other important steps to minimize cancer risk. Vaccines for infections like HPV and hepatitis B can also protect against cancers such as cervical and liver cancer.
Additionally, practicing proper food hygiene by washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly and reducing exposure to environmental carcinogens, like air pollution and contaminated water, can help prevent cancer. Regular health check-ups and cancer screenings are vital for early detection, especially for women (Pap smears and mammograms) and men (prostate cancer screenings). Supporting mental and emotional well-being is also essential, as stress can weaken the immune system and increase cancer risk. With awareness and action, we can work towards reducing cancer rates and improving public health.
