A gas cylinder explosion in a bus caused a fire that injured at least seven workers in Gazipur last night. The incident occurred around 8:00pm when the Charka Textile bus reached Som Bazar in Tumliya union, Kaliganj upazila. At the time, there were 25 workers aboard, and though the identities of the injured are not immediately known, they were treated at the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. One worker, Amena, suffered serious injuries and was transferred to Dhaka for further treatment.
Kaliganj Police Inspector Ashraful Islam confirmed the incident, noting that several workers were hurt as they panicked and rushed to escape the burning bus. Eyewitness Lokman Hossain, a local businessman, stated that the fire erupted while the bus was moving, triggering panic among the passengers. The driver and helper fled the scene as the flames spread. Although nearby shopkeepers and passersby used water and sand to try and extinguish the fire, the bus was heavily damaged.
The Kaliganj Fire Service confirmed that the bus was completely burnt when their team arrived. Sub-Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakar mentioned that the fire service responded promptly after receiving a 999 emergency call. Initial investigations indicate that the fire was caused by a gas cylinder leakage.
