A Bangladeshi couple returns home after spending 5 years in an Indian prison
A Bangladeshi couple, Rashid Sheikh, 40, and his wife Jharna Khatun, 32, from Mallika Para village in Jashore's Jhikargacha upazila, returned home last night through the Benapole check post after serving five years in an Indian prison in Gujarat. Imtiaj Vuia, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Benapole Immigration Police, stated that the Petrapole Immigration Police handed over the couple to his station around 8:30 pm. They were received by Rights Jashore, an NGO, and will be handed over to their families later today. The couple had been trafficked to Gujarat about five and a half years ago by human traffickers who promised them work in exchange for cash. They had started working at a vegetable shop before being arrested by the police and sentenced to five years in prison.
